While Hotaru is a Sailor Moon fan favorite, and is beloved by pseudo-goth girls from Tumblr, she generally doesn't get much attention from casual anime fans. Most anime fans who have seen Sailor Moon direct their attention towards the Inner Senshi, Chibiusa, and Sailor Neptune and Uranus (primarily because their past controversy in the States). She gets so little attention from the "casual" crowd, that there is even Sailor Moon merch (featuring both Inner and Outer Senshi) that completely has Sailor Saturn cut out: Including a poster I own myself! It's ridiculous. Anyway, I guess you could just call this a Sailor Saturn/Hotaru Tomoe appreciation post. More attention needs to be thrown at her.
This week, I started re-watching the shoujo classic 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' for my Film Studies class. While this isn't the first time I've done an analysis of an anime for this class before (I covered Akira, another one of my favorites), this is the first time i've started writing a paper for school about something related to shoujo specifically. I'm basically going to be writing about how it broke a lot of shoujo norms back in the day (other manga such as Kaze To Ki No Uta challenged the norms too, but were no where near as succesful), and the unique animation techniques that are used. Anyway, starting work on this project reminded me how much I love Utena. Maybe I'll post my analysis eventually? Probably not, but who knows.
